School parking lots serve more functions simultaneously than almost any other property type: bus loading, parent drop-off, staff parking, visitor parking, and ADA-accessible access , all in a space that has to safely manage children moving between vehicles and buildings.

Bus Lane Requirements

Bus loading zones on school campuses have specific marking needs:

• Clear delineation of the bus-only zone with bus-specific stencils and yellow/white boundary lines
• NO STUDENT LOADING markings in areas where buses use backing maneuvers
• Directional flow markings keeping bus and parent traffic separated
• Fire lane clearance maintained around bus loading areas per local code

Many Texas school districts have adopted specific bus loading standards beyond base code. Check with your transportation department before restriping.

Parent Drop-Off Zone Marking

Effective parent drop-off lane markings:

• Entry and exit delineation – one-way flow reduces conflict points significantly
• LOADING ZONE markings at stop positions
• Painted stop bars to position vehicles for efficient flow
• Boundary lines separating moving traffic from the loading zone

ADA Requirements for Schools

Public schools are Title II ADA entities. Accessible parking requirements are mandatory and enforcement is through DOE Office of Civil Rights.

• Accessible space count per ADA table based on total lot capacity
• At least one van-accessible space per lot
• Accessible route from parking to each accessible entrance
• R7-8 signs at required heights
