New vs. Old Asphalt: How Surface Age Affects Striping

Not all pavement is the same when it comes to striping, and the age of the surface is one of the most important factors in getting a clean, long-lasting result. New asphalt and old asphalt both present specific challenges , they just happen to be opposite problems.

Getting surface age wrong in either direction leads to stripes that fail early. This guide covers what changes depending on where your pavement is in its life cycle.

The New Asphalt Problem: Oils and Curing Time

Fresh asphalt contains residual oils from the binder that take time to evaporate and cure. Industry standard practice is to wait 30-90 days before applying traffic paint to new asphalt. The exact timing depends on the mix design, weather conditions during curing, and whether the asphalt has been sealcoated.

If you stripe too early, the residual oils in the asphalt will migrate into the paint film, causing it to remain soft, lose adhesion, and fade dramatically faster than it should. We’ve seen striping done at the insistence of a project owner two weeks after paving that looked six months old within 60 days.

New construction tip: If your GC is pushing to stripe immediately after paving to “finish the project,” push back. The 30-90 day wait is not optional if you want the striping to last. Get the curing period in writing.

For new sealcoat over existing asphalt, wait a minimum of 24-48 hours after sealcoating before striping , see our full guide on striping after sealcoating.

Old and Oxidized Pavement: The Opposite Problem

Asphalt that’s been baking under Texas sun for years becomes dry, oxidized, and porous. The surface literally opens up at a micro level, becoming almost sponge-like in its paint absorption.

The challenge here is coverage. A well-maintained lot might take one coat of traffic paint to get clean, bold lines. An oxidized lot will absorb that first coat and require a second pass to achieve the same visual result , which means more material cost and more time. Some contractors will quote a price based on one coat and then either deliver faded-looking lines or push for an upcharge when they get on site.

When we provide estimates, we assess the surface condition as part of the process. If two coats are needed, that’s in the quote. No surprises.

Surface Preparation: What Actually Needs to Happen

Regardless of age, proper prep is what separates striping that lasts from striping that fails:

  • Blow out all loose debris, dust, and organic material from along the lines
  • Check for oil spots or contamination from vehicle leaks , these need to be treated with primer or degreaser
  • Verify surface is dry , not just no standing water, but no residual moisture in porous pavement
  • On very oxidized surfaces, consider a penetrating primer before paint application

If you’re doing a new layout rather than restriping existing lines, layout accuracy is also more critical , there’s no previous line to follow, so measurements need to be right from the start.
